Colombo Plan Scholarship in Engineering

The Colombo Plan Scholarship is offered by the University of Auckland to international students who wish to study undergraduate or postgraduate engineering programmes there. It can only be availed by students who are citizens of Colombo Plan member countries.

  • The recipient gets 3000 NZD towards their tuition fees.
  • Only one person is awarded each year.
  • The candidate is chosen by members of the Faculty of Engineering.

The scholarship was established and is funded by alumni of the Faculty who studied under the Colombo Plan, along with other donors. The candidate is selected based on their academic record, financial need, social engagement and leadership potential.

Criterio de elegibilidad

The scholarship is meant for students enrolled in University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering.

  • Applicant must have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for full-time study in Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or any postgraduate program under the Faculty.
  • Applicant must be citizen of one of these Colombo Plan member countries:
    • Afghanistan
    • Bangladesh
    • Bhutan

    • Japan
    • South Korea
    • Laos
    • Malaysia
    • Maldives
    • Mongolia
    • Myanmar
    • Nepal

    • Vietnam
  • Although Australia is a member of the Colombo Plan, Australian citizens do not have international status in New Zealand and hence cannot avail the scholarship.
  • If the recipient becomes a domestic student during the scholarship tenure, they will no longer be eligible.
  • The money must go towards tuition fees.
  • The scholarship may be held along with any other award, as long as it is approved by the Council.

Mere eligibility does not guarantee the award, and if none of the applicants meet the expectations, the University of Auckland Council may choose not to give the award that year.

Every year, applications generally open in May and close by July. The application must be made to the Scholarships Office during the 6 weeks


Proceso de selección

All the applications are assessed by a Selection Committee, which comprises the Dean, Deputy Dean, and an academic of the Faculty of Engineering. They finally make a recommendation to the University Council regarding the selection.

  • Students will be evaluated on the basis of:
    • Academic merit
    • Financial need
    • Community engagement
    • Communication skills
    • Leadership potential
    • Potential to contribute to the field of study
  • The scholarship will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council.
  • The amount will be paid to the recipient in two installations, in the first and second semester.

Recipients are required to pay all the other fees and costs that are inherent to their degree.


Detalles de la subvención

The Colombo Plan Scholarship was instituted in 2011 by alumni of the Faculty of Engineering. It seeks to aid international students pursuing a degree in engineering at the University of Auckland.

  • Candidates must have already qualified the eligibility criteria for the course they are pursuing.
  • The rules and regulations of the program may be changed at any time by the University of Auckland Council after discussion with the donor, but the main purpose of the scholarship cannot be varied.

Meritorious undergraduate or graduate students in engineering are eligible, if meeting other criteria, to be granted 3000 NZD for their studies. The money is split into 1500 NZD per semester, for a maximum duration of two semesters.
