Ontario Graduate Fellowship

Ontario Graduate Fellowship (OGF) is a result of a collaboration between the government of Ontario and its partner universities. It recognizes the academic excellence of students in graduate studies at the masters and doctoral levels in all disciplines of study.

  • OGF is a merit-based fellowship offered at partner Ontario universities.
  • Students are nominated by their respective departments at the university.
  • Recipients are awarded 12000 CAD annually.

The selection of the recipients of the Ontario Graduate Fellowship is based on their academic background, leadership skills, research potential, statement of research, etc.

Some of the participating universities are the University of Guelph, University of Waterloo, Ryerson University, McMaster University, etc.

The OGF will no longer be offered . This remains as an information source only for current OGF holders while the award is phased out.

Criterio de elegibilidad

Both domestic and international students with student visas to study in Canada are eligible for Ontario Graduate Fellowship. In addition to that, they must:

  • Have an A- or 80% average in the last two years of full-time (or equivalent) study.
  • International students must provide proof of English Language Proficiency.
    • Such as TOEFL and IELTS scores.
  • Students with no grades in either of the last two years, but are registered full-time students in graduate studies, may be nominated.

Proceso de solicitud

Students do not apply for Ontario Graduate Fellowship. They will be nominated by their respective departments at participating Ontario universities.

Nominations will be put forward by the department according to the process and deadline determined within each College.

The nomination deadline for each participating college or university differs.


Proceso de selección

After the nomination process is completed, next comes the selection process. The nominated candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Student academic achievements
  • Existing academic records
  • Graduate application form
  • Demonstration of leadership skills
  • Research potential and statement of research.
  • Personal Characteristics/ Academic Assessment from Referees

The selected recipients will be required to maintain the minimum average in their coursework as determined by their program.

The top universities in Ontario like the University of Guelph, University of Waterloo, Ryerson University, etc collaborated with the government to provide Ontario Graduate Fellowship. The value of the Ontario Graduate Fellowship is 12000 CAD (annually).

Eligibility Conditions for Ontario Graduate Fellowship

  • Students must register and remain enrolled in a full-time master or doctoral program.
  • Must maintain excellent academic standing.
  • Master’s students are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of 2 years and doctoral students may receive the scholarship for 4 years.
  • Students cannot hold two government scholarships concurrently. The scholarships restricted are given below:

The scholarship can be awarded for a minimum of two terms, however, the majority of the awards are awarded for three terms.

The duration of the fellowship is up to the awarding university and is depends upon the recipient’s performance.
