Forestry at Algonquin College

ED
7.5 /10

Fast Track my diploma, it also offered a variety of opportunities to get certificates to build skills. It was very hands on compared to other Forestry programs. I also liked the size of the campus. I could also save money by doing college first and than going to university.

Course Curriculum :

Most of it was really good. It gave a great base to go from. I can better understand some concepts compared to my peers who have only done University and not college as well for Forestry. Though I think there was some stuff that could have been emphasized more. It also doesn't have an Indigenous course which you have to take at my University, so there was some people exempt from it because they took at their college, but I did not take it at mine. My college offered a fire course which doesn't seem to be something that is offered at other colleges with similar programs.

Placement :

There was a two-week co-op opportunity, or it was a month if you co-oped with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for fire. The school provided lots of connections. Websites were also given for easier job searches.

Internship :

The college doesn't provide an internship, but there is a mandatory co-op placement that you have to find yourself. You must pass it as it counts as a mandatory credit. I have nothing else to put but this needs to be 200 characters.

Events :

We had Winterfest to keep the winter fun. We also had lots of Indigenous peoples involvement. There was lots of celebration for international students. One of the big events that were celebrated while I was there was the 50th anniversary of the campus since my college has 3 campuses.

Fees :

Yes, prior to even applying to the program on the site is lists of the potential cost for other equipment that you will need to participate in the program. It is also emailed to you as well. There were no surprise charges. The structure was set up in three semesters.

Scholarship :

Yes, there was an opportunity every semester to apply for financial aid. There was a simple link to go through with the college portal, you would answer some questions, later they would let you know how much money you would have received. I think that for some of the bursaries it depended on your grades of the previous semester if you can be eligible for more.

Examination Structure :

Depends on the professor, most of them were written, some of them were scantron cards. Depending on the type of class, many of them were outdoor exam involving identification. In some of the classes instead of test there would mostly be reports and presentations, or collections we wold have to make to show our understanding.

Faculty :

They all had real life experience and all worked a variety of jobs. Some of them were currently employed in the local Forestry companies which gave us great insight and access for outdoor learning.

Hostel :

Since I was not on a main campus there was no residence. The building that were made for students are not affiliated with the college, they are owned and managed independently. Off campus accommodation was really easy to find. one of the building that most people stayed in was literally right next to the college pretty much.
